Dobbins
Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Ga., is the largest multi-service
reserve training base in the world. Located 16 miles northwest of
Atlanta, Dobbins ARB supports more than 10,000 guardsmen and
reservists from the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines. The base is
home to the 94th Airlift Wing, the 22nd Air Force headquarters,
Naval Air Station Atlanta, the Georgia Army National Guard and
Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems Corporation (Air Force Plant #6,
"Home of the
F22 Raptor").
The base boasts more than 7,000 take-offs and landings monthly and
shares the runway with
.
Built
in 1943, the base was originally called Marietta Army Airfield.
In 1950, the named changed to
Dobbins Air Force
Base to honor Capt. Charles Dobbins, a C-47 pilot from Marietta
whose aircraft was shot down over the Mediterranean Sea during
World War II. In June 1992, the name was changed to Dobbins Air
Reserve Base.
Dobbins Fire
& Emergency Services is staffed by civil service firefighters employed by the US Air
Force Reserve Command.
Two shifts, working 24 hour days man the vehicles and respond to emergencies both
on and off the installation. The department is primarily responsible for Fire, EMS,
Technical Rescue, and HazMat response and also provides fire training and inspections to
the base populace. DFES is also a valuable member of the emergency response
forces of Cobb County, responding to calls with Cobb, Marietta, and
Smyrna fire departments as well as statewide requests through the
Georgia Mutual Aid Group. |
